Don
Clement has been practicing his craft as a photographer
for over forty years. His early work included
black and white film studies of family members,
natural settings and city scenes in Toronto and
New York. Over the years, he has explored
darkroom print-making, colour slides, 8mm film
making, videography and digital imaging.
During his career as a teacher, he
learned photojournalistic and layout techniques
working on school newspapers and yearbooks.
Since
retiring from teaching, he has done professional work in
event photography, portrait and wedding
photography, and model portfolios. Always an
avid traveler, he has photographed in much of
Ontario, western and eastern Canada, Central
America and the Caribbean, and also in Greece,
Italy and France. Since moving to this area in
2005, he has been exploring local Muskoka
scenes, many on his own acreage, with its
abundance of wildlife, water, rocks, trees and
opportunities for gardening.
Don has
a special interest in indigenous peoples, their
culture and their perspective on nature - in
particular, the first nations of Manitoulin
Island and the Maya. Through these contacts and
others, he has come to a deep appreciation of
the spiritual significance of ecological
awareness. Continuing themes in his work are the
seasons, wildlife, wild and cultivated places,
the sea, waterfalls, the effects of light,
textures and reflections. His favoured subjects
include nudes in landscape settings, flowers,
birds, butterflies and scenes which can be
viewed and decoded in several ways.
Although
Don finds great artistic freedom in the use of
digital equipment and the digital darkroom, he
continues to choose slides and print film on
many occasions. The prints displayed here are a mixture
of both - they are available in various sizes
for framing, upon request. |
