Windsor Chairs have been made in North
America since the early Eighteen Hundreds, their design, strength, and
appearance make them as popular today as they were 200 years ago.
These chairs are handmade using the
traditional methods and tools that were used almost 2 centuries ago. The chair
legs, arms, and backs are hand split from green White Ash or Oak logs following
the grain for strength, then shaved with a spokeshave, steam bent, or turned
individually on a wood lathe. The seats are made from White Pine and carved deep
for comfort using adze, chisel, and travisher. The chair is usually finished
with wood stain and a minimum of 3 coats of urethane although the traditional
finish is milk paint with oil or shelac.
I find every chair a challenge and a
learning experience that requires full concentration and attention to detail.
Each chair is unique in appearance and is enhanced by the characteristics of the
wood that it is made from, making it a one of a kind piece that will endure for
generations to come.
