While growing up in Pickering Ontario,
artist Sara Hall was aware of her ability to draw. But
it was not until after moving to Bracebridge in 1994,
and enrolling in a life drawing class at the Chapel
Gallery, that Sara began to nurture her talent. Sara's
academic background is in Political Science, which she
studied at the University of Toronto. Though she did not
study art in school, Sara has taken many workshops, and
has been actively involved in the open studio drawing
groups offered by Muskoka Arts and Crafts. She has also
been very fortunate to have studied with Greg Damery,
who is both an exceptional artist, and a teacher at the
Ontario College of Art and Design.
Sara's work is primarily figurative. She has a
fascination with people, who they are and how they live.
Even her landscapes will often include some trace of
humanity. Whether it be an old barn or a weathered
fence, it is the mystery of who could have been there
before that interests Sara. But it is the representation
of an individual that interests Sara most. Her portraits
and figure drawings, which are sensitively rendered in
both charcoal and oil paints, reflect Sara's desire to
portray not only a person's likeness, but also their
character and vulnerabilities. The relationship between
the artist and her model is a unique and intimate one,
and it is this dynamic which Sara Hall explores in her
work. |
