Born in Hyde county England and
raised in Pickering Ontario, Richard Sawyer has made Muskoka his
home for the past twenty years.
He began making art in the
Toronto area in the late 60's, working with his mentor, artist
Tom Philips, drawing with life drawing groups in the city and
attending some classes at the Ontario College of Art.
Over the years Richard has
developed a distinct and original style of painting. His work is
challenging, thought provoking and hauntingly beautiful.
Painting everything and anything that interests him, some of
Richard's favourite subject matter include heavy machinery, the
human figure and the rocky, craggy landscape of south Muskoka.
Often Richard's work is metaphoric, being painted expressions of
his thoughts, dreams and stories.
Richard has received the Award of
Excellence for oil painting from Muskoka Arts & Crafts'
Annual Spring Members' Show in both 2004 and 2006. He shows his
work annually at the Chapel Gallery with the Life Drawing Open
Studio and Portrait Group. Currently.
