| I made my first wine rack from barrel
saves for the daughter of dear friends as a wedding
present. The oak is naturally aged and dried and
straight grained, like quarter sawn lumber of the past.
A minimum of sanding or buffing for smoothness is all
I do before finishing the staves, rails, rungs, poles
and spokes. The metal work, except for the copper, is
fashioned from barrel hoops.
Harvesting dry spruce and jackpine from muskegs and
fire kills to build tables and shelves in prospecting
tents instilled in me a lifelong appreciation of the
colours and patina of naturally aged poles, enjoyed in
the glow of a gas lantern. I am happy to be working with
these materials again. |
