Creating a Christmas Angel with Power Tex

Karen Fish will show you how to create a stunning angel for Christmas. In this workshop, you will be using the fabric sculpting medium Powertex to create your own original angel from the base upwards. You will be making the armature, molding and painting your creation.

Digital SLR Camera  

Learn how to get the most out of your Digital SLR camera. With this 6-hour course spread over three evenings, you will learn how to maximize the potential of your camera and become a better photographer. This course will cover: camera set-up; digital basics (resolution, picture file formats, colour); understanding exposure; how to combine shutter speed and aperture to capture motion and manipulate depth of field; lenses and how to use them effectively; basic flash photography; accessories for your camera and camera care; field tips and techniques for nature and landscape photography; composition; lighting. Session 2 and 3 will include some hands-on activities designed to improve your photography skills. The course will also include a booklet that summarizes all the information covered.

Felted Hat & Mittens

In this four-hour workshop, you will learn the process of wet felting. Using merino wools and decorative fibres (raw silk, bamboo, banana viscose, hemp and linen), you will create your own hat or mittens. This course will cover the process of wet felting, art touches, building templates for 3D felted objects and introducing multi-layering techniques and effects to your product. During this workshop, you will complete one project (a hat or mittens) and begin a second project with instructions to finish at home.

Encaustic Painting

This is a five-hour workshop with the students completing three pieces. Encaustic painting uses heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface usually prepared wood. You will begin your encaustic painting by learning how to seal wood panels, making and colouring the encaustic medium and applying it to the wood.

Explore the art of bird carving with award-winning master carver, John De Lang. This six-day bird-carving workshop is for intermediate to advanced carvers. In a step by step process, this workshop will teach intermediate and advanced carvers more skills through carving and painting a small songbird (species to be one of three, either a chickadee, goldfinch or nuthatch).

Phoneography Basics: The "best camera" is the one you have with you...your phone!

In this four-hour workshop, you will learn how to use your mobile phone camera to its full potential. Professional photographer Larry Carroll will teach you what the different symbols mean and the options available, correct phone positioning for the best results, basic composition, how to use the self-timer, close-up/macro shooting and when and how to use HDR. Larry will also show you the common mistakes when making a video and how to avoid them. This workshop will also cover basic storage/file management and what accessories you need as well as how to use them. Students will spend the first hour in the classroom and then go for a photowalk (weather permitting) for 45 minutes. The last part of the workshop, students will share their results and ask questions.

Discover Graphite

Drawing in graphite provides all artists with the best foundation for all the other fine art mediums. It is portable, expressive, meditative and endlessly adaptable. In this two-day workshop, you will learn how to make this tool work for you. Using plain graphite and paper, you will learn to express yourself sketching any subject. You will be taught how to make sketches of landscapes, flowers and animals come alive with tone and texture. Refresh yourself with a series of exercises that will open up your imagination to new possibilities.

Brush it Bold

This course will start with a brief talk about subject – muse and inspiration, how to see it and how to bring that forward in your work. You will learn about the definition of good composition, value, colour and line. The instructor will explain the palette, surface and the set up she uses and why. Over the course of the day, the instructor will paint in stages, allowing the class working time in-between. She will demonstrate her value sketch (on the surface), then blocking in the colour and working up the subject. Day 2 will be finessing values, colour and details, adding those little marks that make a painting sing. You will also learn about varnishing, storing and presenting your work. If time allows, there will be a class critique and/or a discussion on promotion and social media.

Join award-winning British Columbia artist Brian Buckrell in this three-day en plein air workshop that is suitable for beginner and intermediate level painters with experience working in acrylic and oil. The demonstrations will be done in acrylic. For the first day, student will work together indoors. You will review fundamentals and approaches to planning for strong composition and will work together from supplied reference material. This will prepare you to better handle the two outdoor days with confidence and enjoyment.  

Painting on location is enjoyable but difficult. The painter is faced with many choices from a vast amount of visual information, changing conditions and limited time. Experienced en plein air artists have an approach to planning their composition before they paint. Time spent planning can speed the painting process and increases the chance of a successful painting/sketch and make the day enjoyable. Please note that not all locations are accessible.

Do you have an old piece of furniture tucked away in the corner of the cottage, boathouse or garage? Bring new life to that piece of furniture or home accessory using some of the newest and trendiest paints on the market. Let cottage style and lake landscapes inspire your creative explorations. Experiment with leaf prints, faux finishes, hand painting, fish and animal motifs, resists and finishing techniques. You will learn the tips and tricks of glazing for that sun soaked yellows of Provence and Tuscany feel, the cool white washes of shabby chic or the tea stained battered look of vintage charm with birch bark as an accessory. Chalk paints, milk paints and some of the new acrylics give a beautiful velvety finish and can be painted over old wood, metal and plastic. Bring a piece of furniture and turn it into a work of art. Old furniture and accessories usually do not have to be stripped or under painted.
